Given that some of you may plan to visit over the next month or so, a few lessons I learned during my visit are worth mentioning:
Don't plan to stay in her apartment.
Limit your visits to no more than several hours at a time. This will give her time to rest, and save her energy for activities with you and others.
Check with her about her schedule before heading to her place. Don't be hurt if she has other activities scheduled, or needs to rest.
Avoid calls to her before 11:00am unless you know that she will be up earlier for an activity; she doesn't have a way to turn off her phone ringers (I'll work on that next time I'm there) and her sleep is important.
Don't get frustrated if you cannot contact her by phone on the first (or second) try. Lots of people are calling, and it takes lots of time and energy to field the calls. She generally checks her answering machine regularly, so if you miss her, try leaving a (brief) message.
Help her keep the apartment presentable. That'll save her energy for activities with you, and the next visitor.
If you have questions, call me (cell: 678-772-6716) or email me (bcobb10b@bellsouth.net).
I expect to return to Sarasota early in the week beginning February 23. Depending on circumstances, I may sneak out the following weekend for a few AHRMA races (it is, after all, Bike Week), but will have my cell phone with me if I do.
Don't let the fact that I'm there dissuade you from visiting. I'm very good at fading into the background during others' visits. I have plenty of stuff to do, and my goal for being there is to facilitate an environment that will make her remaining time as comfortable and stress free as possible. Come enjoy her -- I'll get to visit with you later.
Keep her in your thoughts and prayers, and visit if you can.
Love,
Bill
