Report on Grandma after Bill's Visit of 2/5 - 2/11

I just got back from spending 6 days in Sarasota visiting with Grandma, Katherine and John, Sarah, and Jennifer and Mike. Since the question of the hour is likely "How's Grandma", I thought I'd give you a quick update.

She's still quite active. It is her goal to stay busy and spend as much time as she can with her close friends for as long as she can. She's still participating in the Line Dance team, the Doll Club, bridge two to three nights a week, and lunches, dinners, and cocktail parties as she can schedule them. She hosted a cocktail party for 8 - 10 at her apartment Friday evening (I helped her prepare for it, but didn't attend, a decision hastened by a comment I heard as I walked in the door -- "wow, a man, lock the doors").

Anyhow, all kidding aside, she plans to continue this until reduced energy levels force her to cut back.

The only real difference I noticed during the visit was her need for more rest. Several mornings she slept in till 11:00, and if there was a break between afternoon and evening activities she would take a nap. As long as she did this, she seemed to have energy for the activities.

I think it's both a defensive and offensive tactic. Defensive in that it keeps her busy, and gives her less time to dwell on her situation; offensive in that the higher activity level is way of getting mental and physical exercise that will keep her energy levels up.

Her friends are all amazed at her pace; several commented that she's setting quite an example for them to follow when their time comes. Also, they are extremely supportive; and she commented that when family is not around, they are even more supportive than what I observed.

She has signed up with Hospice. They seem quite competent, sensitive to her and our needs, and easy to work with. They will work with her physicians to help her continue her independent life style as long as possible, then shift into helping keep her comfortable for the remainder. I am comfortable with them in both roles. She will stay in her apartment as long as that is the most comfortable option for her; when that is no longer an option, she will likely move to the nursing care floor of Bay Village. Time lines for this are not predictable, other than the general statements made by her medical team and relayed to you earlier.
