Ian’s Celebration of Learning

The boys — Ian, Oliver, Everett, and Andrew — at Ian’s “Celebration of Learning” open house at Oakhurst Elementary on December 6, 2016.

We can’t think of a greater way to start the Christmas season than joining Gretchen D’Huyvetter Cobb and these four young men for an open house at Ian and Andrew’s school this evening. The topic was a Celebration of Learning by Ian’s class showcasing their recent studies of cultures. Gramma Jan and I were impressed with the material they covered and Ian’s good explanations of their studies. Thank you Ian!!

Happy Birthday James!

On this day, December 5, 1977, James William Cobb arrived into our world in Fountain Valley, California … James added a new dimension to our then family of 3 … John being 10 years older than his new sibling.

James was a big baby who has grown into a big and good man! Bill and I are proud of his many accomplishments … not the least of which is his soulmate, Gretchen, and their four boys!!

Happy Birthday James. Dad and I love you!

My, these boys are developing!!

Andrew and Ian invited us to join them for lunch at their school this week, an early Thanksgiving celebration.  We did not want to miss an opportunity to spend time with these special grandchildren, so off we went to their school in Decatur on Wednesday (lunch with Andrew) and Thursday (lunch with Ian).

They were perfect hosts, guiding us through the lunch line, making sure we got our meal and drink, helping us be seated at the child sized tables, and entertaining us throughout the meal with chatter about their day, classmates, what they are going to do after school, et cetera.

It was a grand experience, and reminded us how quickly these little boys are turning into fine young men.  It also reminded us how thankful we are to live close by and be able to drop in for celebrations like this.

Thank you Andrew and Ian.  We love you guys!

James named to elite list of Georgia lawyers “On the Rise”

From the web site of Atlanta law firm Caplan | Cobb:

“Caplan Cobb is pleased to announce that The Daily Report has named our partner, James Cobb, to its 2015 list of the 40 lawyers in Georgia under the age of 40 who are “On the Rise.”  This is a tremendous honor that follows a highly competitive selection process.”

Congratulations to James for this honor.  We also would like to recognize Gretchen’s role in the honor.  Her support enabled him to perform at the high levels that made it possible.

Oliver and Gramma Jan

Jan and I were in the “Little Shop of Stories”, a child-friendly book shop on the square in Decatur, with Oliver this afternoon. Our outings with Oliver usually involve some form of physical activity, but today it was hot and Gretchen suggested that we try the book shop. He and I played with the train set in the sitting area for a while, visiting with other children who stopped by the area. He soon tired of that and wandered through the book shelves until he found a few books that intrigued him and brought them back to Gramma Jan for her to read to him. It was fun watching them together. Oliver is normally full of energy and bounds off after a short reading session, looking for a new challenge. Today he and Jan read three or four books before the magic wore off. The time was a nice treat for Jan and Oliver.

Everett was baptised on April 12th, 2015 at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Decatur. The D’Huyvetter and Cobb families turned out to support James and Gretchen in this important milestone and to celebrate Everett’s entrance into Christ’s kingdom. Congratulations Everett!!

James and Gretchen hosted a celebration lunch afterward at their home in Decatur.  The gathering was a relaxed affair with good food and lots of time to visit with the D’Huyvetters and play with the kids.

Missing from the celebration were Izzy (ill), Dan (taking care of Izzy), and John & Sharon’s family (spring break vacation).  We missed you all, and look forward to catching up with you soon!!

Photos of the event are in the Gallery.  Click here to go direct to the photo album.

Catch-up time!

Bet you thought I forgot about posting here!

Oliver and Izzy visit after dinner at our November Birthday Bash.

We have two new photo albums in the Gallery.  The first is from the family’s annual November Birthday Bash which was held at James and Gretchen’s home on Sunday, November 16th.  Thanks to Gretchen and James for hosting it, and to everyone else for their food contributions.  Grandma Jan and I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with the adults, but as you will see from the photos, the grandkids were the highlight of the event.  It was great watching them interacting and getting to know each other better.

Chace and Abby with John and Sharon at the Carrollton Invitational Cross Country Meet in September.

The second album chronicles Chace and Abby’s end of year Cross Country Awards Banquet.  I was able to attend a number of their meets this year and really enjoyed watching them and their teammates compete with teams from other schools and enjoy the camaraderie that only team sports brings.  The banquet, organized by Sharon, was the icing on the season cake for Chace, Abby, and their teammates.  Congratulations to our elder grandchildren for their great seasons.

If you missed our photos of Chace and Abby in action at  several 2014 meets, click here to view the album.

Ian is 6!!

Happy Birthday Ian!!

Grandma Jan and I had the privilege of attending the celebration of his sixth birthday with his friends on September 27th at James and Gretchen’s Decatur home. The weather was great and the kids enjoyed being able to run and play outdoors. Ian’s guests were a nice mix of his kindergarten classmates plus neighborhood friends.

It was a great party.  Ian was a great host greeting every arrival with a big hug and cheery hello, and Gretchen and James did a masterful job of keeping the kids busy and entertained throughout the afternoon.Continue reading

HippoHopping with the Hood Circle Trio

This is school break week for Ian and Andrew, and Oliver does not go to school on Tuesdays, so Grandma Jan and I took the opportunity to take the trio on another outing .  We’ve been to most of the kid oriented entertainment places in the Decatur area and were casting about for something new.  The Southern Museum with its trains, Civil War history, and kid oriented activities has been on our list, but it was a bit far for the time available so we tried a new (to us) place called HippoHopp located close to REI on I-85. It looked to be a place that would consume lots of energy.Continue reading
