Grandma's breathing situation has improved since Saturday. We have had no recurrences of the situation she experienced Saturday morning, likely attributable to her full time use of oxygen, and staying in bed.
That doesn't mean that her life is dull, however. Each afternoon brings a flow of visitors. Sarah and I do our best to limit visits so that she does not get overtired, but sometimes -- such as today when the Line Dance team and a few other special friends arrived after Line Dance practice -- the limits go out the window. Art, acting as Master of Ceremonies, kept the liquor and humor flowing, and the whole group kept the conversation lively. It was a good reminder that these special friends are her family as much as we are, and reinforced our efforts to include them in all of our plans for Grandma's time. Due to the libations and the good company, Grandma should sleep well tonight, as she has the past several nights.
Happy hour! Grandma with Louise Clark, her next door neighbor at Bay Village. | Grandma and Leanah | Grandma with George and Mabel Phillips. They were next door neighbors when she and Grandpa lived at Atwood Cay Circle. They've gotten together with Grandma regularly since she moved to Bay Village. |
We plan to try and get her outside for a brief time tomorrow -- thinking that the change of scenery might be beneficial. That is, if we can find a time when someone isn't knocking on the door asking "can I see Margaret?"
Sarah is here with me full time this week, sharing in the load of caring for Grandma. I've thoroughly enjoyed her support and her jovial good company, as has Grandma. Katherine and Leanah spent a good bit of time with us since Leanah arrived Friday, and Lee (who is now working in Venice FL) is spending his evenings with us.
On a personal note, this time of service to Grandma has in turn provided me a unique opportunity to regain a sense of family. I find that I am thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to get reacquainted with Katherine, Lee, and Sarah, and be reminded what neat people they are. Grandma and I have always stayed in close contact, but without realizing it, I had mentally drifted apart from my brother and sisters. Here's hoping that I am able to retain that sense of family after this is over.
This weekend will be "girls weekend" in Sarasota. Christy (accompanied by Jason) is currently en route from North Carolina; Traci and Chloe are flying in from Kentucky either Wednesday or Thursday; Farah (accompanied by William and Damian) is driving up from Davie FL Thursday evening; Julie is flying in from Atlanta Friday night; and Jennifer is a Sarasota resident. It is rumored that the guys will spend the weekend watching March Madness, so Grandma will have the girls to herself -- when she isn't being upstaged by Chloe.
