Hey everyone,
It's been a while since I've spoken with many of you, and an update seemed in order as Gretchen and I get ready for a number of big changes in the coming months. We've been in DC for the last three years while I've been in law school and Gretchen's been teaching. This phase of our life comes to an end soon, though. I'm graduating from the George Washington University Law School next Month (my last day of actual class is this coming Wednesday--but I've got one last round of final exams to get through after that last day before they'll give me my degree). Law school's been great, but both Gretchen and I are ready for a change. And we'll get one--we're moving to New Orleans!
Yes, we're headed back south for a year. Starting in September, I'll spend the next year working as a law clerk for a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. As a law clerk I'll be kind of like an "assistant" judge--researching, writing the first drafts of my judge's opinions, assisting him in preparation for oral argument, etc. It's a great opportunity career-wise, and it should be an incredibly interesting year. And spending a year in a city as unique as New Orleans shouldn't be too bad, either.
After my position ends, we're fairly certain that we'll come back to DC. I've got an offer to work with a law firm up here after my clerkship, and Gretchen's considering starting graduate school. But there's always the chance we'll get sidetracked and end up somewhere else for a time.
The time between now our move to New Orleans is going to be crazy. After I graduate I'll begin preparing to take the bar exam, which will happen at the end of July. Gretchen will be teaching through the end of June. Then we're taking a post-law school pre-New Orleans celebratory trip to South Africa. And then we move.
Anyway, I hope all of you are doing well. If you'll be in DC between now and September, let us know. And the same goes for New Orleans next year.
Love,
James
