James and Gretchen completed a major goal on May 22 when they graduated from George Washington University's Law School. Jan and I were fortunate enough to be there and participate in the celebration.
The weather was fantastic Saturday, the day before commencement. We had a little time for touring, so that afternoon we dropped by the outdoor portions of the DC Botanical Gardens and the new Indian Museum. A beautiful assortment of flowers was in full bloom in the garden, and the ducks were enjoying the sun in their pond.
Mamma duck was an amazing creature. In addition to being a good Mom, she kept a close eye on the legislators at work nearby.
If she could've talked, I'm sure she would've had some suggestions for resolving the judicial appointments impasse.
Saturday night we dropped by the Law School Dean's reception for the graduates, met a few of James classmates, and sampled the bar's offerings. Afterward, we headed out for a wonderful dinner, compliments of James and Gretchen, in honor of Mother's Day and Dad's birthday.
James and Gretchen, thanks for the great dinner and your stimulating company.
Commencement exercises took place on Sunday. James was pleased to learn that he graduated Summa Cum Laude -- quite an honor in a class of 600 plus. After commencement, we attended (another) reception for the new graduates and their families. James' and Gretchen's friends Megan and Jason Cheek joined us.
After
the reception the six of us celebrated over dinner at a restaurant picked by
James and then headed back to James' and Gretchen's for a nightcap and visit.
As James mentioned in his recent update, they will remain in Washington for most of the summer, then take a celebratory trip to South Africa. Upon their return they will pack and head for New Orleans and their next challenge.
James has elected to defer taking the bar until they have decided on their next location after New Orleans. Gretchen is looking at graduate programs in Tennessee, New York, and Massachusetts, Since not all of those states have reciprocal bar agreements with the the District of Columbia, James will wait till she selects a school, then begin working toward the bar exam for that state.
