Bill & Jan headed to Asheville NC and Morehead Design Laboratories on July 31 to pick up their competed van camper. It was delivered to creative guru Robert (Morehead) on April 26th, and in the intervening three months he converted it from a plain-Jane tradesman van wih no windows and an empty interior into our lovely home away from home on wheels.
Robert finished up a few details after we arrived.
Robert, Jim Mize (van owner from the Asheville area, and another of Robert's customers), and Jan.
We will have lots of covered area for rainy days like today. The van we took to Rhode Island -- Robert's personal van -- is on the far side of Jan and Robert.
Home at last.
Our prime design concept was to have a bright, open interior -- no man-cave cramped feeling. I think we accomplished it. This interior view is from the passenger's seat. The abundance of LED lights throughout the interior helps keep it bright even after dark while minimizing power consumption and heat.
The rear area, with all the lights on ...
... and with just the lights over the beds on. In the good old days we would have put on our mood rings & called it "mood lighting".
Our bordello look. For after hours reading ... or one reading and one driving ... or one reading and one sleeping. During our recent trip to Rhode Island we discovered I could sleep while Jan read into the wee hours of the morning with a red light whereas I couldn't when her reading light was white.
Robert added a nice shelf on the front console for Jan ...
... and a custom foot rest. The seats are a bit higher with the swivels installed. Carpet on the foot rest matches the van "house" (rear area) carpet. Cloth trim throughout matches the van seat covers Robert created. Jan picked out the fabric. Good choice, Jan.
The passenger side midship cabinet, showing the abundance of storage space. The toilet (portable type) is hidden behind the lower left door in the cabinet. The white thing on the counter is the remote control for the forward powered roof vent. The dark shapes on the white wall above it are control panels for the electronics (charger, inverter, solar system, furnace, hot water heater).
Cloth trim throughout uses the material Jan picked out.
The main galley counter and full length built in spice rack (above the window).
The combination cooktop and sink. The cooktop is sealed so it can be used as a rack for wet dishes (dishes? I thought campers used paper plates!)
Did I mention storage?
... and more storage?
... and more storage. This was planned to house our Honda generator & lawn chairs.
... and more storage.
... and shower. You should see the shower curtain rack Robert created. It hangs off the rear door. Ian will enjoy showering here. We're looking for an MP3 of "The Stripper" to play when Jan showers.
Looks inviting, doesn't it! The table also has a tripod base so it can be used up front between the driver's / passenger's seats and outside. Cool.
Same view with mood lighting. Needless to say, we are looking forward to many exciting trips! We'll call ahead and reserve driveway space if we are in your area.
